Rally to Map Our Futures
Democracy is again being challenged and the League is stepping up by filing an amicus brief on the Moore v Harper case (the so-called "independent state legislature theory"). On Wednesday, December 7 the LWVUS will also be holding a '#Rally to Map Our Future' in front of the US Supreme Courthouse in Washington DC as the Moore v Harper case is heard. As we all can't get to DC, DuPage Leagues will hold a rally in Wheaton at the County Courthouse. Glen Ellyn League Co-Presidents urge members to attend if they can.

Improving Civil Discourse: The Science of Us vs. Them
Thursday, October 13, 2022 - Hybrid program, offered both in-person and virtual.
Cantigny Park and the League of Women Voters of Wheaton, Glen Ellyn, Central Kane County, Naperville, and Roselle/Bloomingdale continue their Civic Awareness Series on Thursday, October 13, at 7 pm. Terry Wu, Ph.D., will present “How to Stop Infighting: The Science of Us vs. Them.”
The program is offered in person and online. Registration is not required for those attending in person at the Cantigny Park Visitors Center, and parking is free. Online participants should register at Cantigny.org to receive a Zoom link.

Preventing Gun Violence Through A Community of Care
Wondering what you can do to prevent gun violence in your community? Attend the League of Women Voter’s community meeting on September 22nd at Hadley Junior High School in the library. The co-sponsors welcome Phil Andrew and Chris Paterson for a discussion (in-person and online) about preventing violence in our communities and how to restore safety.
Phil Andrew is Principal of PAX Group, a crisis and conflict management consultancy dedicated to helping leaders and organizations navigate dynamic environments. He was previously the Director of Violence Prevention for the Archdiocese of Chicago, and served in the City of Chicago’s Office of Violence Prevention. A former FBI special agent, Phil has led hostage negotiation teams and has expertise in violence prevention, counterintelligence, counterterrorism, and crimes against children. He is an adjunct instructor at Northwestern and DePaul Universities and serves as advisor to the National Security and Human Rights Law Center at Kent College of Law.
Chris Paterson is the Assistant Secretary for the Illinois Department of Human Services Office of Firearm Violence Prevention. Before creating the OFVP, he was the Chief Program Officer at Friends of the Children-Chicago, an organization that provides children facing the greatest obstacles with paid, professional mentors. Prior to joining 2 Friends of the Children, Chris was Senior Director of Programs and Policy for the Institute for Nonviolence Chicago. He has been a thought partner and implementer for Chicago’s largest violence intervention efforts, READI Chicago and Community Partnering 4 Peace. Registration is not required for those attending the September 8 program at the Cantigny Park Visitors Center, and parking is free. Civic Awareness Series: Latinx in the Suburbs
Local chapters of The League of Women Voters are teaming up with Cantigny to host a monthly Civic Awareness Series.This month, the topic is Latinx in the suburbs, featuring speakers Sara Phalen and Elizabeth Cervantes (see short bio below). The speakers will trace the history of Latino immigration to DuPage County and surrounding areas and discuss how LatinX citizens have often struggled and continue to struggle to have an equal voice in this region.
The August 11 program will be in person and online via Zoom. For the in-person program, at the Cantigny Park Visitors Center, registration is not required, and parking is free (just mention that you are attending this function). Online participants must register at the button below to receive a Zoom link.
Elizabeth Cervantes is co-founder and the director of organizing with the Southwest Suburban Immigrant Project (SSIP), an immigrant rights organization in Chicago’s southwest suburbs.
Sara Phalen is active in West Chicago, serving on the boards of the Mexican Cultural Center DuPage, People Made Visible/Gallery 200, and the West Chicago Historical Society.
THE CONSTITUTION, THEN AND NOW: A CASE DISCUSSION
The Museums at Cantigny Park, and the Leagues of Women Voters of Wheaton, Glen Ellyn, Central Kane County, and Roselle/Bloomingdale will host a community discussion about the Constitution on Thursday, July 14, at 7 pm.
The free program, “James Madison and the Making of the Constitution and its Relevance Today,” will examine a critical debate at the Constitutional Convention of 1787:
Should the federal government have veto power over state laws?
How much power – and what kind of power – should the federal government have over states?
These questions have both historical significance and modern resonance. Participants will read a short case in advance and come prepared for discussion. Edwin Noel, social studies department chair at Benet Academy and an Illinois partner with the Harvard Case Study Project, will serve as moderator.
Guests may attend the program in person (at the Cantigny Park Visitors Center, with free parking) or online via Zoom.
Those joining virtually will be placed into breakout rooms with other guests. A League of Women Voters member will moderate their discussions.
Registration is required so that all attendees can receive background readings in advance. Online participants will also receive a link.

Come hear the results of the Consensus Study on Glen Ellyn’s Civic Betterment Party and help the League come to a consensus decision. This kind of effort is core to our League mission.
Leadership prefers that members attend in person as this is a discussion-based effort. A Zoom link will be made available to ensure full accessibility, but we cannot guarantee that Zoom attendees will be able to hear all dialogue in the room due to equipment at the Civic Center.
