Attainable Housing

Attainable Housing.

  • Allows for a diverse Glen Ellyn, empowering those with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities to remain in the community where they grew up, and where they can now flourish as adults.

  • Allows for Senior Residents living on a fixed income, may also be able to stay in Glen Ellyn if attainable housing is made accessible to them.

  • Allows for our Retail and Service Workers who serve us coffee, fix our cars and clean our homes and offices cannot afford to live in this community. We need to pop the bubble and ensure that Glen Ellyn welcomes all.

  • Those who Serve and Protect us don’t live in Glen Ellyn because it is unaffordable. Attainable housing is just that, a means for our neighbors to attain housing they can afford, contributing to the fabric of our Village.

Safe, quality affordable housing is essential to the health and well-being of individuals, families and the community. This has been a long-standing LWVGE position.

Consistent with LWVGE's local housing position, we engaged with local leaders and other community groups in advocating for affordable, accessible and supportive housing on the newly owned Village Property on Taft and Exmoor.

“Fight for the things that you care about, but do it in a way that will lead others to join you.”

— Ruth Bader Ginsburg

We joined in advocacy efforts along with other leaders from DuPage United, Families with I/DD, Habitat For Humanity, Bridge Communities, Hope Fair Housing as well as their clients. We created a powerful voice of caring responsible citizenry and raised a platform for those who need affordable, supportive housing to advocate for themselves.

  • League demonstrated our strength through our presence and our reasonable comments during the 4-month Village Listening Sessions held last summer, as well as at Village Board Meetings.

  • League showed respect to those with opposing views.

  • League demonstrated responsible civil engagement by:

  • Providing individual testimonies;

  • Attending key Village board meetings and having LWVGE officers submitting statements in support of the affordable option for the Roosevelt/Taft property; (as individuals), Signing a petition to support affordable supportive housing on the Taft and Exmoor site; and

  • Providing community education and engagement through our monthly programming and our website.

The Village of Glen Ellyn has not made a decision on the property to date. We do know that developer, Full Circle Communities, and Village leaders continue to be in meaningful discussions about their housing development proposal. The July 17, 2022 front page Daily Herald article highlighted our community’s advocacy efforts to provide needed affordable housing for our residents.  Congresswoman Delia Ramirez has applied for up to $750,000 in funding to assist the Village in the demolition of existing buildings on this property.

So as we await the Village’s decision on the development of this property, we can feel satisfied that our League has worked very hard in advocating for safe, quality, affordable housing in Glen Ellyn.

Time For your action on

Affordable Housing

in Glen Ellyn!

Having one luxury apartment complex after another approved for development in our village has been disconcerting. Our local League has championed the need for affordable housing in this community for YEARS with little success.

This is Our Moment to Speak Up.

We need your help. The League position on Affordable Housing is very clear and has guided our efforts for years. It states in part that, ”Safe, quality, affordable housing is essential to the health and well-being of individuals, families and the community.” We now stand at a critical juncture.

The Village has closed on the purchase of the Roosevelt Road hotel properties’ site with the goal of redevelopment. Being situated along the Roosevelt Road Corridor, the property parcel facing Taft Avenue is ideal for workforce housing for persons employed nearby. This development is an important way to show support of our businesses that need the workers in need of affordable housing.

The newly hired housing consultant from the firm of Kon Savoy presented the “Design Charette Process” they will utilize with the trustees to identify ALL possible types of developments.

The results of the “Design Charette Process” will then be presented at public meetings before the Plan Commission and the Village Board where public comment can be made. However, providing input to Trustees proactively BEFORE the idea development stage rather than AFTER is of CRITICAL importance.

CALL TO ACTION! Here is where you come in.

Please send an email to our Village Trustees asking them to prioritize building MUCH NEEDED AFFORDABLE HOUSING! Click the “Email the Trustees” button below to express your concerns. This feedback will be sent to all the Trustees.
