The Museums at Cantigny Park, and the Leagues of Women Voters of Wheaton, Glen Ellyn, Central Kane County, and Roselle/Bloomingdale will host a community discussion about the Constitution on Thursday, July 14, at 7 pm.
The free program, “James Madison and the Making of the Constitution and its Relevance Today,” will examine a critical debate at the Constitutional Convention of 1787:
Should the federal government have veto power over state laws?
How much power – and what kind of power – should the federal government have over states?
These questions have both historical significance and modern resonance. Participants will read a short case in advance and come prepared for discussion. Edwin Noel, social studies department chair at Benet Academy and an Illinois partner with the Harvard Case Study Project, will serve as moderator.
Guests may attend the program in person (at the Cantigny Park Visitors Center, with free parking) or online via Zoom.
Those joining virtually will be placed into breakout rooms with other guests. A League of Women Voters member will moderate their discussions.
