Community Meeting: Mis/Disinformation Awareness

  • Glen Ellyn Civic Center 535 Duane Street Glen Ellyn, IL, 60137 United States (map)

In person. The League of Women Voters of Glen Ellyn and Wheaton will host a Community meeting on Mis/Disinformation Awareness, featuring Barbara Laimins, Co-Chair of the Mis/Disinformation Task Force of the League of Women Voters of Illinois.  Barbara’s discussion will focus on the spread of mis/disinformation, its impact on voters' ability to discern fact from falsehood, and the importance of making informed decisions as we approach the upcoming Presidential election.

Decisions are based on what voters hear on social media and in the news. When they are unable to distinguish between truth and mis/disinformation, confusion and misunderstandings can lead to a generalized sense that “you can’t believe anything anymore.” Mis/disinformation ultimately undermines trust in legitimate information sources, increases polarization in our society, and leads to misinformed decisions. A well-informed citizenry is essential to democracy, and the League of Women Voters aims to encourage educated voting.

The League is a political grassroots network and membership organization that believes the freedom to vote is a nonpartisan issue. For more than a century, the League has worked to empower voters and defend democracy. As a women-led organization, it encourages everyone to take part in our democracy.

League of Women Voters members and the community are welcome to attend this free event on Thursday, October 17 to be held at 7 pm in the Clayton Room at the Glen Ellyn Civic Center, 535 Duane Street in Glen Ellyn.
